The Japanese population has long been thought to have descended from two ancient groups: the Jomon hunter-gatherers and later migrants from East Asia. However, a recent genetic analysis from RIKEN's Center for Integrative Medical Sciences has revealed a more complex picture. Using whole-genome sequencing on over 3,200 people from across Japan, the team found evidence of a third ancestral group tied to northeastern Asia and possibly linked to the ancient Emishi people. This discovery supports the 'tripartite origins' theory of Japanese ancestry, which has been increasingly discussed in recent years. The study also revealed that Japan's population is genetically more diverse than previously assumed, with regional differences across the country. The findings have important implications for our understanding of Japanese history and ancestry, and could potentially improve healthcare by identifying genetic variants linked to specific traits and diseases. However, the study also highlights the need to expand genomic databases to include more Asian populations, in order to better understand disease risk in diverse populations.
