Previous research suggests similar mechanisms occur in Saharan dust mixing with sea spray, generating chlorine atoms that aid in methane decomposition.

For engineers aiming to combat atmospheric methane, the study offers a promising pathway. Researchers propose using reactors to extract methane and bubble it through chlorine-saturated brine or spraying chlorine directly into the atmosphere. However, challenges remain, such as verifying the effectiveness of their methods. Co-author Jos de Laat emphasizes that measuring methane removal requires precise satellite data, which the study addresses by showing methane breakdown can be observed through space-based imaging.

This breakthrough underscores the potential of natural processes to contribute to climate mitigation. As global temperatures rise, innovative strategies inspired by volcanic methane reduction may become essential tools in slowing the planet’s warming trajectory.
